    Howard Gaul:Owner Collision Concepts, Inc.
    Job ShadowEvaluation
    Hours:9am-5pm
My name isWill Steinmetz. I am 17 years old and a junior at Hatboro Horsham High School. When I was asked to find a job shadow I immediately thought I would like tolearn more about the collision repair industry. My job shadow experience wasvery positive. My day of learning “behind the scenes” information exceeded myexpectations. I was not only able to jobshadow the owner but I was also given the opportunity to do some supervisedcollision work.
Thisprofession is in the automotive cluster. My mentor Mr. Howard Gaul the owner ofCollision Concepts shared with me one of the most challenging aspects of thisprofession is dealing with many insurance companies. As the owner of thebusiness Mr. Gaul sets the hourly repair rate for his shop but most insurancecompanies write estimates for flat rates per job or hourly rates that they setdepending on the size of the job. This can lead to disagreements between howmuch Mr. Gaul asks to be paid for a specific job and what he actually will getpaid from the insurance companies. There is also a lot of paper work to bewritten and filed in this business. Mr. Gaul and I discussed one solution whendealing with the insurance companies which is “negotiation”. Mr. Gaul will write the estimate and then theinsurance company writes their quote as to how much they want to pay Mr. Gaulfor the job and then they basically go back and forth until they come to anunderstanding of the final job cost and the payment that will be made.
Thisprofession does interest me because if allows you to be creative. I like thefact that you can see a car come into the shop “wrecked” and then see the finalcompletion of the car.
I found myjob shadow with Mr. Gaul because my dad had previous work done to his truck atCollision Concepts. I decided to call Collision Concepts to see if the ownerwould agree to let me follow him for a day. During
my job shadow experiance i shadowedI met Steveand Dave who currently work at Collision Concepts and they shared theirexperience with me. I also met several car owners dropping off vehicles orwaiting for estimates and I met an auto body shopinsurance agent who was there to write aquote.
My mentorcame out of high school wanting to attend Spring Garden Institute formechanical engineering. He also was working after school part time for the thenowner of the collision repair business. Mr. Gaul then made a career path changeand decided to continue working in this profession. He eventually bought thebusiness
and learnedrenamed it Collision Concepts. Mr. Gaul never got a degree in thisprofession. He has attended many important things aboutclassesin color mixing for painting cars.
My mentorexemplified the traits of being energetic and flexible the entire day I wasthere. From the time he arrives at work he has to continually move from one jobto another. He started off telling each employee what their job was that dayand then stopped to write an estimate. He then dealt with an insurance adjustorwho was there to write a quote. He then went into the paint booth to spray acar. Once that was done he had to sand a door down and primer it for the next day’swork. He also dealt with several phonecalls and parts suppliers. He is a very busy man.
In myopinion the coolest aspect of
this job.profession is being creative on many levels.I like the fact you are not doing the same job all day. You move from one thingto another and get to see the final result and the happy customer.
My leastfavorite part of this job is the mountains of paperwork that Mr. Gaulcontinually deals with each day.
My mentorspoke with me about how he likes owning his own business since it enables himto have flexibility to choose jobs that challenge and inspire his creativity. He loves working on old classic cars with “wild” paint schemes. Mr. Gaul alsovalues the time when he can occasionally sneak away and participate in sportswith his two sons. He enjoys owning his own business and being creative.
I havelearned that with hard work and determination I can someday have my ownbusiness which will allow me to express my creativity. I really enjoyed doingthis job shadow experience and wish I could go back and work another day atCollision Concepts.
